Margieanne Gregory Shuling

June 11, 1924 — July 15, 2014

Margieanne Gregory Suhling, 90, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Born June 11, 1924, in Salisbury, NC, she was the daughter of Anne Spencer Gregory and Lee Overman

Gregory.

Named Margaret Anne Gregory, early in life she embraced her nickname of Margieanne, and in her later years Margieanne was her preferred name even on legal documents.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Edward Colhoun Suhling, both parents, and her two brothers, Lee Overman Gregory, Jr. and Spencer Gregory, both of Raleigh, NC. She is survived by a daughter Leigh Suhling Barth and her husband Brad, a daughter Anne Suhling Simms and her husband David, a daughter Meg Suhling McCann and her husband Tom, a son William Gerhard Suhling II and his wife Stephanie, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Margieanne was educated at St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, NC and Hardbarger Business College in Raleigh. After her marriage, she adopted Lynchburg as her hometown and often said that her favorite place on earth was her beloved Hanshill, where she and Zu spent their summers for over 50 years. Margieanne was interested in the world around her, including politics at every level, and served as a precinct judge for many years. She participated actively in local groups, serving on the boards of the Florence Crittenden Home and Lynchburg Historical Foundation. She was a member of Lynchburg Junior League and was a past president of Hillside Garden Club. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She and Zu moved from their home of 53 years to Westminster-Canterbury in 2002. There she continued to be active in the community. She chaired the annual residents’ Craft and Food Sale to benefit the Employee Education Fund, and was a member of the Nature Trail Committee. Margieanne was outgoing and social, and a wonderful hostess. She loved gadgets, especially kitchen gadgets, and was determined to keep up with technological advances, becoming an enthusiastic member of the computer age. Via e-mail, she enjoyed corresponding with her faraway children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and won many ribbons for her beautiful daffodils. Even in the last few years, she continued to purchase new varieties of roses and have her children tend them for her. She was an accomplished seamstress, an avid reader, loved birds, and loved the game of bridge.

A memorial service will be conducted in The Commons at Westminster-Canterbury at 2:00 pm Saturday, July 19, 2014 with a reception to follow.
