Maria Inoa Santana de Maslow, 97, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away quietly on Thursday, June 8, 2023 and joins her husband of 60 years, Frederick William Maslow, who preceded her in death in 2010.
Maria is survived by her only son, Robert Maslow, and his wife Beverly Thompson Maslow. To her three grandkids, she was simply known as ‘Mami’. They are Luke Maslow (Justin), Mark Maslow (Meredith), and Karla Maslow Jones (Lucas). She also had five great grandchildren, Meg and Mia Maslow, and Gavin, Hadley, and Dayton Jones.
Maria was born in the small, rural town of Tamboril, Dominican Republic to Maria Santana and Leonte Inoa on September 16, 1925. She was the youngest, and fiercest, of three brothers and two sisters. She was raised on a family farm in Tamboril until she moved to Santo Domingo where she met Frederick. They married in 1950 and Robert was born two years later.
During her life in the Dominican Republic, she had a successful business as an entrepreneur buying, renovating, and selling homes. After moving to the United States in 1961, she spent her time raising Robert and taking care of her family in Lynchburg, VA and then Schenectady, NY. Upon her husband’s retirement from General Electric in 1986 they returned to Lynchburg full-time to be close to Robert and his family where she resided until her death.
She was known to walk as many as 7 miles a day, loved her garden, and was often in the kitchen. She always dressed to the nines, was full of energy, and had great dance rhythm. She could do anything she set her mind to and she would not hesitate to let her son, daughter-in-law, and grandkids know what would make for a successful life – whether they wanted to hear it or not. She was a fierce protector of her family and leaves behind a legacy of endurance and perseverance.
A memorial service will be held at Timberlake Christian Church at 20261 Lynchburg Highway, Lynchburg, VA on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Timberlake Christian Church.
