Marianne Skinner Galloway died on Monday morning, August 31, 2015, at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Dunedin, Fla., a daughter of the late Francis Lee and Susan Brumby Skinner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wallis Skinner; and her sister, Barbara Skinner Messerschmidt.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Galloway Ackley and her husband, Jim; her son, Robert Lee Galloway, Jr. and his wife, Karen Campbell; two beloved grandchildren, James A. Ackley, Jr. and his wife, Emily, and Margaret Cummins Ackley and her fiancé, Stephen Karaffa; and a host of nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Marianne was a 1949 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she majored in chemistry, and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She also attended Lynchburg College where she majored in accounting. Marianne was later employed by the Edmunds and Williams law firm as a tax accountant.
As an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Marianne was a vestry member, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and spent many years in the church kitchen preparing for parish functions. She was a long-time member of the Ragged Robin Garden Club, served as a volunteer at Lynchburg General Hospital, and was a former member on the board of directors for the Miller Home, Seven Hills School, YWCA, the Florence Crittenton Home, and Generation Solutions. Marianne was a former member of the auxiliary boards of the Williams Home and the Junior Women’s Club, and served as a Brownie Scout leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. Her generous spirit was demonstrated by her volunteer work as a driver for Meals-on-Wheels and Dial-a-Ride, and she was an active participant with Habitat for Humanity.
Marianne’s warmth and hospitality were boundless. She hosted a lively annual Christmas party at her home for more than forty years, and built a house at Smith Mountain Lake that became a gathering place for extended family, friends, and friends of friends. Nearly seventy years after leaving Dunedin for college, Marianne remained close with her classmates from Clearwater High School, and she regularly attended her college reunions.
The family will receive friends at the home of Susan and Jim Ackley, 238 Woodland Avenue, on Thursday, September 3, 2015, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Following a private inurnment service at the church columbarium, a memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Friday, September 4, 2015, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, Marianne suggested that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504; the Miller Home, 2134 Westerly Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24501; Habitat for Humanity, 360 Allegany Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501; Randolph College, 2500 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503; or a church of your choice.
