Marie Cockerill Wheeler, 95, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, March 13, 2016 at her home. She was the widow of the Rev. Paul Augustine Wheeler to whom she was married 70 years.
Born January 30, 1921 in Fairfax County, VA she was a daughter of the late Welby H. Cockerill and Nellie Lee Cockerill. Marie was a life-long member of the Wesleyan Church serving in mission work, as a Sunday School teacher, pastor’s wife, missions trips, and secretary for FAA. She was a member of Lynchburg Crosspoint Church.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Lee Cockerill.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Karen Gillespie; her son, John (Jack) Welby Wheeler and wife, Deb; six grandchildren, Matt, Bill, and Jimmy Gillespie, Kym Andrews, and Laura and Jacob Wheeler; 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; her brother, Louis Cockerill; her sister, Catherine Sickles; and her special friend since she was three years old, Ferne Cooper.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 18, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at First Church of the Nazarene on Wards Ferry Rd. in Lynchburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marie Wheeler Memorial Fund at 109 Kings Grant Dr., Goode, VA 24556.
