Marie Teresa Gorman Larzelere, 95, of Fredericksburg, passed Wednesday, February 7, 2018. She is predeceased by her parents, Leon Aloysius Gorman and Rose Marie Schmutz Gorman, and all of her siblings: Geraldine, Anne, Rosemary, John, and Elizabeth. She is the widow of Dr. Henry Byron Larzelere.
Marie was born on February 20, 1922 in Hartford Conn. She grew up in Philadelphia, Pa., where she attained her nursing degree. She joined the U.S. Army on January 15, 1945. She left active duty on February 28, 1950 and served in the reserves until 1960 achieving the rank of Captain. While working as a surgical nurse, she met her husband Henry who was a surgeon, they married on June 19, 1954, they resided in Lynchburg, Va., from 1969 to 2008.
Marie was active in many civic and community organizations. She served on the Community Service Board, held a position in the Reserve Officers Association, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, served a term as Commander of the Lynchburg Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars, and was active in the Virginia Right to Life movement assisting unwed mothers.
Marie enjoyed music and was a member of the Holy Cross Church choir. Her passion for gardening extended to her becoming a Master Gardener as part of the Virginia Extension Program. Her intellectual interests and artistic hobbies were many and varied. She was a voracious reader of current, historical, and philosophical works. Marie loved to sew, paint, and design, reflecting her artist’s eye in her ability to see new possibilities in the world around her.
She is remembered with love by her children Loretta Larzelere, Mary Glass, Genevieve Shober, John Larzelere (Jane), and Annette Fitzgerald (Robert). Marie is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Brian, Geoffrey, Austin, Stephen, Christen, Jacob, Rebecca, Sarah, Charles, Audrey, Matthew, Katherine, Thomas, Michael and Elizabeth; her great- grandson, Henry and her nephew, Rory O’Connor (Karen) and their children, Darren, Ryan, Rhiannon and Timothy. She is also fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
The funeral Mass will be held at 12 noon , Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, located at 710 Clay St., Lynchburg, VA, 24504. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery located on Bedford Ave., Lynchburg, VA, 24503. A visitation will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 from 7 to 9, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg located at 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia, 24502.
