Martha Adkins Rice was born on July 23, 1925 to Toy and Margaret Adkins, and passed away on November 24, 2020 at the age of 95 in Roanoke, Virginia. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Thomas Jennings Rice, Sisters Mary Ellen Adkins Dempsey, Leslie Adkins Dean, and Alice Adkins Robinson, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Rice Bowling and Elizabeth H. Rice, brother-in-law Wayne Eugene Rice, nephews Joe and David Dempsey, and nieces Susan O’Connell and Sarah Elizabeth Rice.
Martha graduated from Strayer Business College and went on to spend the majority of her career in Washington D.C. as a personal assistant to Mrs. George Garrett, and as a Clerk for Judge Stanley Sporkin.
She was and Tom is very active as members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Martha was known for her charm and grace, infectious smile, and her kind and compassionate spirit. She loved travel and the arts, especially the ballet.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff of Our Lady of the Valley for the exceptional love, care and support shown to Martha and her family.
The care of Mrs. Rice has been entrusted to Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford, Virginia. Her niece will spread her ashes.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York.
Due to the pandemic, a service will be planned when possible.
