Our beloved Martha Ann Washington departed this life on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
Martha was born in Amherst County, VA on January 15, 1943, to the late McKinley Goode and the late Gladvs W. Goode Bell. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William M. Goode.
Martha attended Central High School in Amherst County, VA until she relocated and moved to Washington, DC in her late teen years where she worked and met her first husband, the late Donald Harris. She later worked for Thomas House Nursing Home from where she retired.
Martha accepted The Lord as her personal Savior and she was a member of the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church located in Washington, DC where she faithfully continued to contribute, in spite of her illness that prevented her from attending.
Martha leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband: David Washington; her siblings: sister, M. Marie Andrews of Fredericksburg, VA; her stepbrother, Jerry Bell (Joyce) of Covington, GA; her children: Roberta L. Goode of Lynchburg, VA; Donald E. Harris (Sherita) and Derek S. Harris (Delinda) both of Washington, DC; six granddaughters: Tiffany, Octavia, Ebony, Michal, Tonae and Allexis; two grandsons: Carlton E. Goode and Landen: one son-in-law: Carlton E. Lawrence (FATTS); two stepdaughters: Chesa and Shareeka. She also leaves behind fifteen great grandchildren; two nieces with whom she shared a close bond: Sherri Andrews and Vernetta Clark; four nephews who were close to her heart: Thomas Roberson, Melvin Goode, Raymond Goode and Ronald Lee Goode; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Martha’s life will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg chapel. Interment to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
