Martha Moore Clarke

d. December 5, 2016

Martha Moore Clarke, 71, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2016.  She was born Martha Jane Gilhooley on December 3, 1945 in Christiansburg, Virginia to Thomas Edward Gilhooley and Mildred Strong Gilhooley.

Martha is survived by her loving husband John Parker Clarke, Jr., her beloved children Laura Ann Clarke and James Benton Moore III, her granddaughter Ellery Keira Moore, her daughter-in-law Dr. Kathryn E. Williams, her sisters Mildred Anne Gilhooley Ramsey and Marie Gilhooley Eisele and their families, her mother-in-law Evelyn Camden Moore, her nieces Chris Carrington Winters and Claire Carrington McDowell, and her cherished Bridge Club friends Dianne Cornelison, Brenda Milnor, and Peggy Candler.  Martha is predeceased by her sister Susan Carrington Greenly and her first husband James Benton Moore, Jr.

Martha graduated with honors from Holy Cross High School before attending the University of Cincinnati.  As the owner of Commonwealth Lighting and the Lamplighter for 30 years, Martha searched the globe for beauty, bringing light and style to homes throughout Central Virginia.  In business, Martha was known for her exquisite taste and tireless work ethic.  After retiring, Martha earned her B.A. from Lynchburg College, volunteered at Amazement Square, and became a licensed real estate broker in Ocean Isle, North Carolina.

Martha was an avid reader and lover of music and the arts. She loved the beach in summer, the ski slopes in winter, and always looked forward to the first blossoms of spring. Martha loved chocolate in all seasons.  Her kind and patient spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

“Yours is the light by which my spirit’s born: you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.”

A celebration befitting Martha’s life will be scheduled for the bloom of spring.  Should you wish to make a memorial donation, kindly consider the important research at University of Virginia’s B.I.G. Center or WNRN public radio.
