Martha S. Smith, 90, of Bedford, VA went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 2, 2022.
She was born on February 6, 1932 in Bedford County, daughter of the late James Rufus Smith and Florney Christine Mayhew Smith. She was married to Clyde T. Smith for 58 years and he preceded her in death in 2010. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Iris Blankenship, Lula Fran Moore, Bevie Johnson, Jeanette Overstreet, & Trudy Maxfield.
Martha is survived by her children Susan Hite, Tommy Smith (his wife Patricia), and Karen Smith (special friend Allan Shelor); her grandchildren Ryan Smith (his wife Candice), and Joel Smith; her great grandchildren Thomas Smith, Hadley Smith and Adeline Smith; her sisters Ann Bruner, Marilyn Overstreet, Patsy Maxfield, and Sybil Wray; and brother James (JW) Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Martha graduated from Bedford High School and Phillips Business College. She finished her working career as a legal secretary at the age of 44.
Martha was a faithful member of Flint Hill Baptist Church in Moneta where she taught Sunday School, served on various committees, and taught Vacation Bible School over the years.
Growing her faith in Jesus Christ and being with her family and friends were the most important ways to spend her time. She also loved her flower gardens, cooking, canning & freezing the garden vegetables, decorating her home, reading, and her photo albums.
Martha leaves behind many friends and family who love her and will greatly miss her.
The family sends a special thank you to the folks at Richfield Health Center – Roanoke and the Good Samaritan Hospice team who recently cared for Martha and for their many acts of kindness to all of us.
The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, October 6, 2022, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. located at 320 North Bridge Street, Bedford, VA. The funeral service will be at Tharp Funeral Home with Rev. Joey McNeill officiating on Friday, October 7, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
