Martha Shotwell Hickson

May 24, 1936 — January 24, 2022

On May 24, 1936, Martha Shotwell was born to Dr. Harry Clark Shotwell and Pauline Preston Phipps Shotwell of Lynchburg. Martha joined her older sister, Nancy Shotwell, in this loving family.

Martha spent her childhood on Boston Avenue in Lynchburg building cherished friendships that would last her lifetime. Travel was a prevalent part of Martha’s life, starting with a transatlantic voyage on the HMS Queen Elizabeth to watch the Coronation of the Queen in 1953, a story she loved to share with great fondness.

After graduating from E.C. Glass High School, where she met her future husband, Robert Walker (Bobby) Hickson, she attended Westhampton College at the University of Richmond. Missing her beloved Lynchburg, she transferred to Randolph Macon Woman’s College and finished her studies there, earning a BA in Psychology.

Shortly after college, Martha married Bobby and later welcomed three children, Robert Walker (Rob) Hickson, Jr., Steven Shotwell Hickson, and Ellen Clark Hickson. The family on many occasions embraced their love of travel, with Martha and Bobby especially enjoying trips to Hong Kong, a favorite destination.

Martha and Bobby spent their lives in Lynchburg, supporting the community in many ways, and were founding members of Peakland Baptist Church.  And, as an avid volunteer and with passion for the greater community, Martha supported Meals on Wheels for many years, serving as both an administrator for the organization and providing volunteer support.

Heartbroken by the loss of Bobby in 1994, she dedicated the rest of her life to staying close to her children and friends, and later enjoyed the birth of her grandchild, Walker. He always managed to bring that signature great smile to her face.

Martha truly enjoyed a fulfilled life of 85 years, and died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, January 24, 2022. She is survived by her three children, Robert Walker Hickson, Jr., Steven Shotwell Hickson (Min) and Ellen Hickson Haag (Doug); her grandson, David Walker Morris, niece Meg Bruce (John) and nephews Bill Hickson and David Haga (Sharon).

The family would like to thank Brenda Jones for the loving, constant and compassionate care that she provided to Martha. We are also grateful for the care and assistance provided by Heather Cook, Shannon Layne and Jennifer Coleman.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 28, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Peakland Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service at Boonsboro Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial contributions be made to Peakland Baptist Church, 4018 Peakland Place, Lynchburg, VA 24503.
