Martin Brian Hildenberger, 57, died peacefully at his home in Lynchburg, on Friday, November 24, 2017.
He was the son of Eileen Lyle Hildenberger and the late Martin Joseph Hildenberger Jr.
Martin was born on September 2, 1960, in Lynchburg. He graduated from the Special Education program at Sheffield School in 1982. After retiring from eighteen years of meaningful employment at Lynchburg Sheltered Industries, he was enriched by friendships and activities at DePaul Family Services Day Support Program.
Martin lived from 1991 to 2000 at the Appomattox Group Home and from 2005 to 2017 at Forest Hills Intermediate Care Facility, where he was loved by wonderful housemates and devoted care providers.
Martin is survived by his mother; five sisters, Sr. Mary Frances Hildenberger, DC, Kelsey “Ruth” Zimmerman (Fred), Martha Hubbard (Steve), Claire Ott (Warren), and Eileen “Lee” Lass (Paul); four brothers, John (Denise), Mark (Brenda), Bruce (Kirby Purcell), and Kevin (Susan); one aunt, Sr. Frances Lyle, OSU; and many nieces and nephews.
Martin’s unconditional love extended to family, friends, housemates, care providers, fellow parishioners at Holy Cross Catholic Church, and even strangers. His joyful enthusiasm and gentle soul will be greatly missed.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay Street, Lynchburg, on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Friday, December 1, 2017, from 6 until 8 p.m.
