Marvin Wilson Lawhorn

Marvin W. Lawhorn, long-time resident of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away on February 3, 2025. He was born on December 10, 1931, in Bore Auger, Bedford County, a son of the late Clyde and Mary Lawhorn. In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by a son, Michael W. Lawhorn, a daughter, Rose Marie Lawhorn Keys, his first wife, Shirley Lawhorn and his second wife, Barbara Ann Lawhorn; stepdaughter, Nancy Speight; stepson, Scott Torode; two brother-in-law’s, Johnny Stafford Billy Obenchain.

Marvin proudly served in the US Navy for five years during the Korean War, life member of USS Brownson DD868 Assoc., life member of USS Strong DD758 Assoc., life member of Tin Can Sailors Assoc. and life member of VFW VA At Large, member of American Legion Post 16, Plank owner Navy Memorial, Navy League Roanoke chapter, Smith Mountain Moose Lodge. He retired from Johnson Controls, Roanoke office with 40 years’ service. He is a life member of Johnson Controls Retirement Assoc.

He is survived by three children, Rodney Lawhorn and his wife, Petra, Bruce Lawhorn and his wife, Sherry and Greg Torode and his wife, Julia; stepchildren, Ricky Falwell and his wife, Vicky, Brian Torode and his wife Denise. Grandchildren, Kimberly Keys, Cody Lawhorn, Heather King and her husband, Kyle, and Michael Lawhorn, Jr.; great grandchildren, Kalen King, Conner Michael King, Lennox Torode and Asher Torode; daughter-in-law, Cathy Lawhorn; son in law, Sonny Keys; two sisters, Shirley Stafford and Karen Obenchain; one brother, Tim Lawhorn. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

A memorial service and celebration of Marvin’s life will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Tuesday February 25, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jackie Carver officiating. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the United States Navy Honor Guard.
