Mary Belle Patterson White

Mary Belle Patterson White, 93, of Lynchburg passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, December 22, 2019. She was born in Roanoke, Virginia on September 23, 1926, daughter of the late Belle Virginia Burkholder Patterson and the late Samuel Edmond Patterson. She is also preceded in death by her daughter in law Beverly McLaughlin White.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Thomas Olin White; children, Thomas O. White Jr and wife, Mary, of Appomattox, Richard E. White of Lynchburg, and Virginia W. Abernethy of Hampton; grandchildren, Julia White, Andrew Paciocco, Jessica Gauldin (Marshall), Alden Abernethy (Ashley), Ariane Walter (Christopher), and Spenser Abernethy; and great-grandchildren Violet, Chloe, and Landon.

From a young age Mary developed her love of horses and continued to ride well into adulthood. After graduating high school at the age of 15 she went on to attend Randolph Macon College where she graduated class of 1947 with a degree in biology with a minor in mathematics. Mary was the first female branch manager of Fidelity Bank in Lynchburg, where she was a teller for many years. After retiring in 1984, she went on to volunteer at the main branch of the Lynchburg Public Library for over 20 years.

Mary lived a life full of love beside her high school sweetheart, Tom. They enjoyed travelling together and her favorite place they visited was Nova Scotia. She also loved repeatedly visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the state of Oregon. Mary loved cats and had many as pets over the years. She also loved cooking and leaves behind an extensive cookbook collection. Mary also converted a bedroom of her home into a library to store all of her precious books. She instilled her love of cooking, baking, and reading into her children and grandchildren. Mary loved being a good host and never failed to ask you if you wanted a Pepsi. She had an infectious smile and loved to show off her silly side to those closest to he.

In lieu of flowers, Mary would have loved to see donations made to the SPCA.

A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Spring Hill Cemetery with Pastor John Vest officiating.
