Mary Bernadine Parish

Mary Bernadine Parish, 73, formerly of Lynchburg, VA passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013, in Glen Allen, VA.

Bernie was born April 28, 1939 in Waukon, Iowa to the late Walton and Mary (Baxter) Mellick.

Bernie was a loving mother to Michael Parish of Roanoke, and Steve Parish (Tina Counts) of Glen Allen. In addition to her children, Bernie is survived by twin grandsons: Cameron and Connor Parish; two sisters: Catherine Thayer (Clarence) of West Des Moines, IA and Jean Beck (John) of Milwaukee, WI; a close friend Carl Akers of Lynchburg, an Aunt Irene Baxter, a cousin Julie Baxter Lacina of Iowa City, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernie became an RN later in life and worked at Central Virginia Training Center, UVA, and Eastern State Hospital. She loved learning and was an excellent student. In her youth her devoted companion was the family's Boston Terrier (Boots). Always close to her grandparents (Grandma and Papa Baxter) who provided their granddaughters with piano lessons and eggs from their own chickens. After her retirement she enjoyed her computer and her investments and enjoyed sending stock tips to her brother in law. Bernie and Carl were always delighted to share an evening meal with visiting family and Bernie was always glad to delight others with news and photos of her grandsons. They brought her great joy. Her friendship with Carl was a treasure to her for over 20 years. She was proud of her Irish heritage and her Catholic faith. A quote form her father that was important to her was \"you can go anywhere else late, but you cannot go to church late!\"

A Mass of Resurrection will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2013 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with the Father James Gallagher officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service.
