Mary “Meg” Callaham Carrington, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2018, at her home. She was born in Lynchburg, on September 5, 1950 to the late James Matteus Callaham “Jim” and Edna Wright Callaham “Peggy.”
She graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1968 and went on to work in banking for 15 years before deciding to stay home to raise her children
For many years, Meg was the co-chair of the Horticultural Committee at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and her talents in landscape design left an indelible mark on the lovely grounds. She was known for being a fervent lover of all animals, as was evidenced in her inability to say “no” when her children would bring home various animals throughout the years. She was passionate and committed to keeping her yard and garden immaculate, and did so until the day of her death, which she spent in her yard making sure that everything was pristine.
Meg’s passions in life included: drawing, hand smocking beautiful children’s clothing, landscaping, researching local and family histories, and caring for a multitude of animals throughout her lifetime. Her greatest joy, however, was being a mother. To her children’s many friends, Meg’s home was always open and always filled with laughter. She was accepting of all, nonjudgmental and forgiving, and a source of great comfort and loyal companionship to all who knew her. She was an incredible, selfless mother who protected, provided for, guided, challenged, forgave, and cherished her children. She is at peace now, having finally been reunited with her son and many precious pets, including Belle and Maddie.
Meg was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Peggy Callaham, and her son, William Alexander Carrington, III “Alex.” She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, James M. Callaham, Jr., “Mack” and her sister-in-law, Betsy Rankin Callaham; her former husband, Sandy Carrington; her daughter, Catherine Carrington Oliver “Katie”, and her son-in-law, Brandon Lee Oliver; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, near and far.
After a private graveside service, a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Clay Street, Lynchburg, Va.
