Mary Carter Davis, 86, of 1014 Knight Street, Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 26, 2025.
Born on November 26, 1938, she was the beloved daughter of the late Charles Carter and the late Emily Blair Carter.
Mary is survived by one sister; Ellen Carter, 3 grandchildren; Lettissia Williams, Jessica Horsley (Carl), and Ellamont Garland (Zita); 8 great-grandkids. Tacora Horsley, Carl Horsley Jr, Anaya Williams, Delonta Garland, Dominik Garland, Tyneka Garland, Tynisha Garland, and Kayla Garland; 4 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mary is predeceased by her son Tyrone Lewis Garland, brothers; Celveland Carter, and Charles Carter, sisters; Maggie Scott, Emily Hamlett, and Rosa Lee, and great grandson, Daion Williams.
Affectionately known as “Mary Cherry” by her family, Mary was a radiant presence in the lives of those who knew her. Her quick-witted humor, candor, and gift for storytelling brought joy to all she encountered. Despite the challenges she faced in her younger years, her ever-present smile was a testament to her resilience and warmth.
A cherished matriarch of her neighborhood, she was known as the “Mother of Knight Street,” earning the love and admiration of her neighbors. Family was at the center of Mary’s life as she shared a deep bond with her late sister, Rosa, and treasured her baby sister, Ellen. From her younger years, she found joy in caring for children, often babysitting many of the little ones in the family.
Although Mary had one child, she shared a deep and loving bond with her niece, Veronica “Mickey” Carter, who was devoted to ensuring her well-being and providing her with unwavering care and support.
Mary was also a talented crocheter, known for her beautifully crafted hats that she made with love and care. Her legacy of kindness, laughter, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held on January 31,2025 at 1pm at Tharp Funeral Home with Bishop Jay Logan officiating. Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg is assisting the family.
