Mary Clayton Scudder

Mary Clayton Scudder, 85, of Lynchburg, Va, died Saturday, December 28, 2013. She was the wife of John Ralph Scudder, Jr.

Mary was born Thursday, November 29, 1928 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a daughter of the late Fred Lee and Helen Hunt Clayton. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in education and a certificate in library science and earned a Masters Degree in library science from the George Peabody College for teachers.

She was retired from Lynchburg College where she served as Director Emerita of the Knight-Capron Library. Because of her dedication, service, and contributions to the college community, Lynchburg College established an academic award in her honor. The Mary C. Scudder Award is presented to a senior majoring in a humanities and social science discipline whose senior paper best exemplifies the qualities of excellent scholarship.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Cynthia S. Freeman of Lynchburg and Catherine S. Burke and her husband, David, of Roanoke; a son: John R. Scudder III of Lynchburg and a brother: Ernest C. Clayton of Tuscaloosa, Al. She is also survived by five granddaughters: Jennifer E. Cumby of Lowesville, Amy F. Gregory of Edmond, Ok, Georgia H. Freeman of Lynchburg, Jackie S. Burke of Harrisburg, Pa, and Carrie J. Burke of Roanoke and four great-grandchildren: Logan Gregory of Edmond, Ok. and Eli, Schuyler and Willoughby Cumby-Wooldridge all of Lowesville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Lee Clayton, Jr., and a sister, Lillian C. Hinton.

A celebration of Mary's life will be conducted at 11 am on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at First Christian Church with Herb Moore officiating. The family will receive visitors at a reception held at the church immediately prior to the service from 10 am to 10:45 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary's name to either the Free Clinic of Central Virginia at 1016 Main Street, Lynchburg, Va. 24504 or to First Christian Church at 3109 Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg, Va. 24503
