Mary Edith H. Barley, 98 of Lynchburg, VA passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022.
Born on October 30, 1923, she was the daughter of Francis (Shorty) and Lottie Hauswirth. Also predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Earlie L Barley and her sister, Shirley T Hawkins.
Edith is survived by her son, David E (Butch) Barley (Sue) of Concord, VA; Special nieces, Judy and Brenda and nephew Charley; many, much loved, nieces and nephews; great nephews; great-great niece and nephews.
She was a member of Old Forest Rd. UMC, Lynchburg, after the closing of First UMC, Lynchburg and spent many hours throughout many years being of service to her church. When not volunteering at church, she would often be at a local nursing home “helping the old people” (her words). Note; she was in her 80’s and 90’s at the time.
Edith was a hairdresser by trade and an animal lover by nature. A sign on her door summed up her feelings on life, “Animals Welcome, People Tolerated”. Especially in her later years, you could find Edith outside in her yard with the local wildlife; most notably the deer, squirrels, birds, and her beloved feral cats. For this reason, in lieu of flowers, please donate to your local humane society or TNR (trap, neuter, release) program. If preferred, please consider Meals on Wheels.
The family would like to extend its thanks to all of the friends and neighbors who visited, called, and helped Edith. A special thank you to Joanna and her group from ProMedica Hospice and the ladies of Caring From The Heart, who helped make her last days comfortable.
A graveside service will be held at Fort Hill Cemetery on Wednesday August 17, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. A visitation will immediately follow.
The family requests casual dress only at the service.
Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
