Mary Ellen Hylton, 84, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, December 20, 2015, in Lynchburg.
She was born in Lynchburg on April 30, 1931, a daughter of the late Swanson Simmons Hylton and Ellen Thornton Hylton. As a child, Mary Ellen grew up in Bedford.
Mary Ellen earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) and her Master of Guidance and Counseling degree from the University of Virginia. She was employed by school systems in Shenandoah, Lunenburg, Pittsylvania and Bedford counties, as well as the cities of Danville and Lynchburg. She taught music, English, social studies, physical education, driver education and career education. She also coached girls basketball and served as a visiting teacher.
Mary Ellen was raised in the church and participated in church choirs most of her life. She and her close friend Nancy White founded an Assembly of God church in Bedford. In their retirement, Mary Ellen and Nancy moved to Lynchburg and became affiliated with The Kirk, now Forest Community Church. Mary Ellen believed that her greatest achievement was accepting God’s gift of forgiveness through Jesus Christ, and that through Jesus she would have eternal life in Heaven. She believed that this is the greatest discovery anyone can make and it determines their eternal destiny.
Mary Ellen, Nancy and sometimes relatives and friends traveled extensively in the United States, Europe and Nova Scotia.
Mary Ellen is survived by her sister, Harriet Kay Hylton Catlett, and niece, Evelyn Ellen Catlett, both of Danville.
