Mary Frances Evans Tweedy of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on Friday morning, March 29, 2019 at the age of 92. Born in Concord, Virginia on March 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Mary Willie (Mamie) Dickerson Evans and DeWitt Septimus Evans. Mary Frances was the widow of Marvin Cardwell Tweedy, her husband of 68 years.
A graduate of Concord High School, she attended Longwood College and retired from Lynchburg Public Schools after 26 years. Mary Frances was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served in various capacities, including over 20 years on the Wedding Committee. She was a member of the James River Chapter of the DAR, an honorary member of The Woman’s Club of Lynchburg, a member of the Ragged Robin Garden Club, and a former member of the Virginia Baptist Hospital Auxiliary.
Mary Frances enjoyed many years of working in her flower beds, collecting coins and antiques, playing Bridge, and playing and teaching Mah Jongg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Cardwell Tweedy, two brothers, Thomas DeWitt Evans of Appomattox, Virginia, and Lewis Dickerson Evans of Salem, Virginia and one sister, Virginia Evans Elder of Brookneal, Virginia.
Mary Frances is survived by her daughter, Ann Carol Tweedy Tucker (William Fainter Tucker, Jr. “Bill”) of Hilton Head, South Carolina, one grandson William Fainter Tucker lll (“Will”) of Charlotte, North Carolina, three nieces and four nephews.
A celebration of Mary Frances’ life and faith will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 6, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held in the Narthex following the celebration where the family will be able to visit with family and friends.
A private inurnment will take place before the memorial service.
