Mary Grace DeWitt Cunningham, of Lynchburg, Virginia died Sunday, December 15, 2013, just hours before her 99th birthday. She was the widow of Elbert Prentis Cunningham. Born on December 16, 1914 in Bedford County, Virginia; she was the daughter of the late James Lewis DeWitt and Vara Ruth Hughes DeWitt Hudson.
Mrs. Cunningham was a charter member of Heritage United Methodist Church, where she was past president of the United Methodist Women, founder and chairperson of the Life Lighters for fifteen years, and a past member of the choir.
Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the Golden Merrymakers, entertaining many as \"Minnie Pearl\". She was also a member of the Emmaus Community, and was past Worthy Matron of the Lynchburg Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #54.
A graduate of Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing (RN), Mrs. Cunningham worked for thirty-nine years for the Lynchburg Health Department as a public health nurse, and later was the nurse at the Presbyterian Home.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters; Nellie DeWitt Crawford Lyons Floyd, and Gladys DeWitt Moon, and three brothers, Charlie M. DeWitt, James Malvin DeWitt, and George C. DeWitt.
Mrs. Cunningham is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn C. O\"™Brien and Terrence E. O\"™Brien of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and a son and daughter-in-law, Richard P. Cunningham and Janet C. Cunningham of Forest, Virginia. She is also survived by two sisters, Jewel H. Hogan and her husband, Jennings, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Ann Hudson Edwards of Chesapeake, Virginia, and a brother-in-law, Roy A. Moon of Mechanicsville, Virginia.
She leaves seven grandchildren: Lauren C. Baddar, Richard P. \"Chip\" Cunningham, Jr., Terrence, John and Michael O\"™Brien, and Jason and Steven Perdieu. She is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren, and many devoted neighbors and friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, December 18, 2013, from 7 \"" 9 pm at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia, and at other times at the home of her son, Richard P. Cunningham. Funeral services will be conducted 11 am, Thursday, December 19, 2013, at Heritage United Methodist Church, 582 Leesville Road, Lynchburg Virginia, with a reception to follow. Interment at Spring Hill Cemetery will follow the reception.
