Mary “Granny” Brown Spence

Mary \"Granny\" Brown Spence, 100, of Lynchburg passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2012. She was the wife of the late Roy \"Buck\" Spence.

 

Granny was born in Bedford County on April 23, 1911 and was the daughter of the late Robert E. Brown and Eddi St. John Brown. She was a member of Big Island Baptist Church and worked at James Lee for a number of years.

 

Mary is survived by her children: daughter, Donna and Ed Sanderson of Lynchburg, and son, Alan and Janice Spence of Lynchburg. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Edward S. Sanderson, II and his wife, Teresa; Timothy A. Sanderson and his wife, Karen; and Jeffery A. Spence and his wife, Missy. Her seven great-grand children also survive her: Kaitlin and her fiancé, Brandon; Bryan, Christian, Erica, Tatum, Kimber, and Kortlyn.

 

Mary was predeceased by her brothers and sisters: Otis, Tom, Clarence, Bill, Jordan, May Ella Downey, Ethel Rice, Helen Putney.

 

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Big Island Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Big Island Cemetery.
