Mary Helen Marks Fleck

Mary Helen Marks Fleck, 94, of Forest and Lynchburg, passed away on February 7, 2019, in Lynchburg.
Helen was born on November 7, 1924, the daughter of Earsey and Ruby Coleman Marks. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. George Fleck, DVM, her parents; two sisters, Ruth Snead (Henry), and Louise Davis (Weldon); and a brother, Leonard Marks.
One of six children, Helen excelled and delighted in her role as the backbone and matriarch of a large, loving family. Although she had no children of her own, she was always mindful of her extended family and she was constantly considerate and generous, and could always be counted upon to provide gentle-but-firm and understanding guidance. Her real and abiding passions were her family and her friends who enjoyed both her company and her exceptional sense of humor.
Survivors include two brothers, Clyde Marks (Eleanor Brown) of Forest, and Earsey Marks Jr. (the late Frances Hardwick Marks) of Jacksonville, N.C. Survivors also include George’s son Jay Fleck; and son-in-law, Jim Settle.
Also left to cherish her memory are many nieces and nephews, with whom she was very close. They loved her deeply and were loved in return. They are Dianne Robertson, Jennifer Loving, Brenda Frank, Pamela Kimley, Michael Marks, Kelly Karnes, Danny Marks, special niece and companion Karen Marks, Robert Marks, Kenneth Marks, and the late Gary Davis. She was also a beloved aunt to 20 great-nephews and nieces and 11 great great-nephews and nieces.
Helen retired from C&P Telephone Company after 47 years of progressively responsible service. She enjoyed her life and loved to travel, for both intellectual stimulation and the competitive incentives of casinos in the region. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and for many years served as a volunteer at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was an avid member of a Lynchburg bowling league and a faithful member and supporter of First Methodist Church and, later, Chestnut Hill Methodist Church.
A celebration of Life will be conducted for Helen at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019 in the Chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg with Rev. Dr. Paul Baker officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Interment will follow the service in Presbyterian Cemetery.
