Beloved and respected mother, grandmother and friend, age 90, died peacefully in her sleep on December 30, 2015 in her home of 59 years. She is survived by her three children, Janet Lynn Gumprich Freeman (Bob), John W. Gumprich (Joan), and Lawrence Kilgore Gumprich (Sherry) and two grandchildren, Alyson Claire Gumprich and Joseph Preston Gumprich.
Born in Flushing, Ohio on September 25, 1925 to Holley (Daniel) and John Kilgore, she grew up on the Daniel family dairy farm in Bannock Ohio, a coal mining town of 150 residents. She attended a one room school and later received a B.S. in Business Education from Ohio State University.
After marrying Wilbert Carl Gumprich, they moved to Lynchburg for Wilbert’s position as a nuclear engineer with Babcock and Wilcox. She was an AAUW Lifetime Member, past member of the Suburban Women’s Club and the Lynchburg Women’s Club. For the past 12 years, she participated in the exercise group at the Templeton Senior Center. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed serving as a docent at the Maier Museum for a number of years.
Her lifelong interest in genealogy led her to serve as Regent for the Poplar Forest Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and to join the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century.
She also taught Business Education at Phillips Business College for 32 years, cared for her father-in-law for five years and was one of the first in Lynchburg to learn to operate a home kidney dialysis machine, allowing her husband an additional year with his children before his death in 1971. She loved collecting, reading, watching public TV and listening to public radio.
After a visit to the Shenandoah Valley, she had the foresight to buy a time share week at Massanutten that allowed her family to gather yearly for 35 years.
While we deeply miss her presence on earth, her wisdom and love will always be with us.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday January 7, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.
A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday January 8, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Fred Holbrook officiating. A reception will follow the service in the narthex.
