Mary Lee Ervin Pappanastos, 80, of Lynchburg, Va., died peacefully on Saturday November 17, 2018. She was the wife of William E. Pappanastos for 53 years. She was born January 14, 1938 in Knoxville, TN. Mary Lee was the daughter of the late Thomas M. Ervin and Mary Flosetta Ellis Ervin. She grew up in Lewisburg, TN and attended George Peabody Teachers College.
She worked in Huntsville, Alabama as an executive secretary at Brown Engineering engaged in the Saturn rocket program. Due to her husband’s career, the family moved from Huntsville to Lynchburg, Va., Akron, OH, then Worcester, MA, Charlotte, NC and then returned to Lynchburg. She was actively involved in many volunteer activities, and while in Worcester, she became the president of the Worcester Foundation Auxiliary. Her other favorite activities were caring for her family, cooking, entertaining and enjoying the company of her many friends. She lived life to the fullest with a smile on her face and unending love in her heart.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her beloved siblings Jane Ward and Jackie Ervin. She is survived by her loving husband, William Pappanastos, her children LeeAnn Sanders and her husband Malcolm Sanders of Harrisburg, South Dakota, Ernest Pappanastos and his wife Michelle Williams Carroll of Sarasota, Florida, Greg Pappanastos and his wife Lisa Vergara Pappanastos of Charlotte, NC, her six grandchildren, as well as her brothers Thomas E. Ervin of Nashville, TN and Jerry Ervin of Knoxville, TN.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of Mary Lee’s life will follow at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. The Rev. Dr. Robert Putt will be officiating.
