Mary Lee Tayloe, 102, of White Stone and Lynchburg, Virginia, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at home in Lynchburg, where she resided with her daughter for the past 4½ years.
Mrs. Tayloe was born October 6, 1907, at Ramah, Northumberland County, Virginia, to Howard Alexander Straughan and Cora Lee Garland Straughan. She was educated in Richmond County Schools, Fredericksburg Normal School (now Mary Washington University) and RPI (now Virginia Commonwealth University).
Mrs. Tayloe began her 46-year teaching career at the age of 19 in the Cople Schools, Westmoreland County; taught many years in Warsaw, Richmond County; and spent her final teaching years at Davis and Providence Junior High School, Chesterfield, Virginia. She retired to White Stone, where she was involved in many volunteer activities in the community and in her church.
Mrs. Tayloe was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Garland Hudgins of Hampton, and brother, Howard Straughan, of Heathsville. She is survived by her five children: Edward Thornton \"Mickey\" Tayloe, of Hanover, Pa.; Alan Garland Tayloe, Sr., of Manassas, VA; John Randolph Tayloe (Cheryl) of Valley Village, CA; Mary Ogle Tayloe Cudd (Anthony \"Tony\") of Lynchburg, VA; and Harry Marbury Tayloe, III, (Janet) of White Stone, VA; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock. Date and time of service to be announced at a later date.
