Mary Lou DeWitt of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on December 13, 2018 following a long and courageous battle of Parkinson’s. Formally of Gardner, Massachusetts, she was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on March 15, 1934 to the late George C. Holden and Grace Voss Holden.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth C. DeWitt; daughter Sarah DeWitt Cavacas (Alan); son Eric DeWitt; and her brother Eugene Holden (Betty). Mary Lou was a graduate of Michigan State University and received her Master’s degree from Lynchburg College.
Mary Lou was a loving mother and is survived by her son Carl H. DeWitt (Barbara) of Lynchburg, daughter Erica D. Silverman (Norman) and two grandchildren, Skyler Silverman and Holden Silverman of Charleston, SC.
Upon early graduation, Mary Lou married the love of her life, and became an elementary school teacher. In 1960 after giving birth to Carl, she became a stay at home mother and the family moved to Gardner MA where Ken was hired as a furniture designer for Conant Ball. Not only was she very active in her children’s lives, she was very involved in community outreach projects, civic organizations and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She particularly enjoyed serving with the College Club, for which she was a past president. The family moved to Lynchburg in 1981. Mary Lou earned her Master’s degree at LC and became a Licensed Professional Counselor. She practiced for many years and retired from Centra Health.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, December 18 at 2 p.m. A reception will be held at the church following the ceremony.
