Mary Lynn Brown, 73, of Amherst, died on Friday, February 1, 2019.
Born on October 23, 1945 in New Martinsville, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late Dorothy A. Keifer Guthrie and the late Robert Guthrie.
She was a 1967 graduate of West Virginia University and later received two masters degrees in education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She spent her career teaching in Virginia and Louisiana. For nearly twenty-five years, she was an educator at Saunders Middle School, both as a teacher and an administrator, where she was universally loved by her coworkers and students. There is a special place in heaven for middle school teachers.
She was a member of Amherst Presbyterian Church and Amherst Woman’s Club, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and served on the Board of Directors for the Amherst Glebe Arts Response (AGAR).
She will be forever remembered as a loving mother, devoted grandmother, and loyal friend to so many.
She is survived by her son Jay M. Brown (Betsy) and their children, Jack Miller and Mary Addison Brown; her daughter, Shannon E. Popp (Richard) and their daughters, Gretchen Daisy and Naomi Summer Popp; her half-sister, Pat Rich; cousins, Margaret Sine, Kathleen Higinbotham, Libby Crona, and Tom Worst; life-long friends including Rebecca Palmer, Jeanie Fuller, Peggy Eaton, Claudia Stutzman, Elaine Parker, and others whom she held so dear.
A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. A Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at Amherst Presbyterian Church with Pastor Brian Miles officiating.
