Hamblen, Mary Mercer Porter, 62, passed away on July 16, 2014 after a short illness. Born January 25, 1952 to the late Elizabeth Haile Neal Porter and the late Henry Daniel Porter, Sr., Mary grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia and attended E.C. Glass High School and Winthrop College.
Mary is survived by her husband of 36 years James Allen Murdock Hamblen; a son James Allen Murdock (Dock) Hamblen, Jr; a daughter Elizabeth Mercer Hamblen Griffin and her husband Christopher Michael Griffin of Durham, NC and a brother Henry Daniel (Dan) Porter, Jr. of Richmond.
Mary was a gentle and caring soul who dearly loved her friends and family. She particularly enjoyed being a very involved grandmother (Memaw) to her grandchildren Stirling Elizabeth Griffin and Christopher (Chris) Michael Griffin, Jr. She was an inspiration to her children and grandchildren.
Mary lived a full and vibrant life. For many years, Mary enjoyed attending UVA football games where she would root for the Hoos with family and friends. She enjoyed travelling to Emerald Isle, NC every year with her family. It is there she would take long walks with her family and collect the best seashells with her granddaughter.
Mary worked with Robert Gentry & Associates for 42 wonderful years.
A celebration of her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, July 22 at 4:00 pm with Reverend John Scholer officiating. A private family service will be held at a later date.
