Mary Ann Paljug passed through the wall of death into the loving hands of her lord and savior Jesus Christ on December 22, 2023 at the age of 69. She was at home in peaceful sleep.
Mary Ann was born on December 9, 1954 in Beckley, WV. She was involved in many kinds of activities and sports. She moved to Lynchburg in 1972, where she enrolled in the LGML Hospital nursing program and obtained an RN associate’s degree. Mary Ann and Joe were brought together on a blind date at a softball game with friends. They were happily married on May 16, 1975.
Mary Ann worked as an RN first in the hospital, then later in an ENT office. After having children, she retired for a few years and devoted her time to motherhood. Eventually, she began helping at Tomohawk Elementary first as a teachers aide, then later with the ESL program. She also served on the church hospitality committee and choir.
Mary Ann enjoyed many sports and outdoor activities, including softball, bowling, water and snow skiing, and especially golf (it was the only way for her to be with Joe!).
Mary Ann is preceded in death by her father, Harold Goddard, and mother, Thelma Anderson. Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 48 years, Joseph, and her two sons: Brian Paljug (Katharine) of Charlottesville, and Jason Paljug (Hayley) of Blacksburg (yes, we are a house divided, but love each other dearly). She is also survived by her sister Paula Sgro and brother Joseph Goddard (Angela), both of Beckley, as well as her niece Nicole, nephews Brandon and Matthew, and two precious grandchildren Oliver and Hazel.
Mary Ann fought a long battle with hideous cancer. Throughout her struggle she remained joyful, courageous, never complaining, and helping, and always had a smile for everyone. Mary Ann was a beautiful, thankful, loving, and giving person. We will miss her dearly.
We are so thankful for all the prayers and support we have received over the past 5 years, but especially in the past 2 weeks. We must thank Mary Ann’s doctors, nurses, and staff for providing her care and comfort. There are so many to thank, but Drs. Patel and O’Neill of the Pearson Cancer Center and their staff are especially appreciated.
