Mary Scott Dias

March 27, 1965 — January 31, 2016

Mary Scott Sutherland Dias, 50, of Woodbridge, Virginia, passed away on January 31, 2016, after a long illness.

Born in Lynchburg on March 27, 1965, she was the eldest daughter of Doris Hanson Sutherland and the late Sidney Everette Sutherland III.

Mary Scott was a graduate of Villa Maria Academy and E. C. Glass High School. She earned her BA from the College of William & Mary in 1987 and subsequently earned her paralegal degree. A 27–year veteran of the United States Tax Court, Mary Scott began her career as a Trial Clerk for the court in 1988 and went on to serve as Chambers Administrator for three federal judges. From training clerks to coordinating trials, Mary Scott was known for her warmth, attention to detail, and dedication to her work.

Outside of work, Mary Scott loved supporting her sports teams — especially the Pittsburgh Steelers — and hosting game-day parties for friends. She and her husband, Bob, enjoyed any opportunity to travel, especially cruises, and had a knack for finding great restaurants wherever they went. Mary Scott also loved baking goodies for friends and family, and she was affectionately known as a mother hen. Perhaps more than anything, she enjoyed spoiling her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband, Robert F. Dias of Woodbridge; her mother, Doris Sutherland of Lynchburg, Virginia; her brother and sister-in-law, John E. and Susan M. Sutherland of Baltimore, Maryland; her sister and brother-in-law, Laura O. Sutherland and William T. Van Doren of Charlottesville, Virginia; her mother-in-law, Dorothy A. Dias of Woodbridge; her brother-in-law Timothy Dias of Culpeper, Virginia; her aunt and uncle, Shirley H. and Richard D. Roberts of Virginia Beach, Virginia; niece Sherri L. Dias of Culpeper; nephew Alexander G. Dias of Culpeper; nieces Sydney E. Sutherland (goddaughter) and Grace T. Sutherland of Baltimore; nephew Edward J. Sutherland of Baltimore; and cousins Cathy Dodge of Virginia Beach, Helen Roberts of Virginia Beach, and Caroline Darby of Birmingham, Alabama, as well as their families.
