Mary Smith Garner

Mary Frances Smith Garner of Deer Haven Farm went to be with the Lord and the Love of her life on December 6, 2011.

 Mary was born on December 26, 1928 in Charlottesville, Va. to John Henderson Smith and Edna Clayton Smith. She was raised and adopted by Thomas and Beatrice Clayton in Lynchburg. She was a graduate of Brookville High School and Phillips Business College. Mary was her husband\"™s bookkeeper and right hand in operating Clayton Electric Company, Deer Haven Farm and raising their children.

 She was an avid reader right up to the end even though she only had vision in one eye.  Mary was a member of Providence United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer until she became charge treasurer of the Providence-Whites Charge which she served for many years.

 Mary is survived by the seven children she raised. Steve Garner of Lynchburg, Janet Hooper and her husband Randy of Evington, Karen Berry and her husband Reggie of Lynchburg, Gary Garner and his wife Lynn of Lynchburg, Thomas Garner and his wife Tricia of Lynchburg and Beth Morrison and her husband Richard of Elon, and  Laura Pribble and her husband Keith of Forest. She is survived by grandson\"™s Robert Dodgion and his wife Jennifer, Phillip Dodgion, Greg Garner and his wife Ashton, Daniel Garner, Ross Garner, Stephen Garner, Cyrus Morrison, Carter Berry and his wife Kelly, and Johnny Chapman.   Granddaughters are Katie Gardner and her husband Andy, Elizabeth Whorley and her husband Brent, Starr Garner, Corey Morrison, Lynn Berry, and Stephanie Chapman.  Her great grandchildren are Lucas, Rena and Nathan Pribble, Gabriel and Emerson Garner, Grant Gardner, Victoria Chapman and Charlotte Virginia Berry.  Mary has two sisters; Betty McKinley and Dorothy Simons of Colorado.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lewis Garner, an infant son; Paul Clifford Garner, a granddaughter Mary Katherine Garner, a daughter-in-law Delores C. Garner and a brother Jack H. Smith.

 Her children would like to thank the extraordinary staff at the Summit Assisted Living where Mary had an apartment when she couldn\"™t be at the Farm. They were so wonderful to her in making her apartment her home away from home and helping to take care of all her needs. Many thanks to her special friends Martha and Mary Johnson.



 The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Friday December 9, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg.

A Celebration of Mary\"™s Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday December 10, 2011 at the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg with Pastor Paul Gillespie officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
