Mary Spencer Jack Craddock, 101, died on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at her residence in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born in Greensboro, Alabama, on December 12, 1912, she was the daughter of Dr. Theodore Henley Jack (former President of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College) and Alice Searcy Ashley. Her beloved husband, Dr. George Barksdale Craddock, died December 11, 1985. She is survived by her children: Dr. George Barksdale Craddock, Jr. and wife, Martha, Theodore Jack Craddock and wife, Sallie, and Alice Craddock Massey and husband, Joe; her grandchildren: Sarah Carter Craddock Sorenson, Mary Spencer Craddock Scurry, Agnes Vail Craddock Ragsdale, Theodore Henley Jack Craddock, George Barksdale Craddock, III, Jenny Grier Craddock, Ashley Parkinson Craddock, Alice Ashley Massey, and Helen Price Massey; and her great-grandchildren: Sarah Carter Sorenson, Eric John Sorenson, III, Agnes Craddock Sorenson, John Peyre Thomas Scurry, Mary Henley Spencer Scurry, Thomas Smith Ragsdale, Clara Carter Ragsdale, and George Volland Craddock.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Emory University, and an Honorary Alumna of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, Mrs. Craddock was President of the Junior League of Lynchburg, President of Lynchburg Antiquarian Society, President of Hillside Garden Club, President of the Lynchburg Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, a member of the Lynchburg Bicentennial Commission, a founder of the Lynchburg Museum System, a founder and Board Member of Seven Hills School, and the Virginia Regent to Gunston Hall Plantation. She also enjoyed serving on the Boards of the Lynchburg Red Cross, Y.W.C.A., The Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, The Florence Crittenton Home, the Lynchburg Historical Society, Family Services of Central Virginia, Point of Honor, and was longtime Chairman of the Lynchburg Friends of Stratford Hall.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, September 4th at home.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, her church of 75 years.
