Mary Wilson Nowlin, 89 of Campbell County, Virginia, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord, Monday, July 31, 2023. She was the former wife of the late Roger Nowlin, Sr.
Born in Appomattox County, Virginia, January 24, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Janie Green Valdes and the late Charlie Wilson Jr. In addition, she was preceded in death by her brother, Theodore William Green.
Mary accepted Christ at an early age serving in Mount Peeler Baptist Church. She was a 1952 graduate of Campbell County High School, Rustburg Va. Mary, during her school years, was nicknamed, “Sunshine” because of her smile and personality. Mary was employed with Jumbo Restaurant, Richmond Highway; Duti Duds Uniform factory, and a retiree from Virginia Baptist Hospital in 1999.
She was actively involved with the weekly Senior Wellness Alliance Group (S.W.A.G) at Crossroads Baptist Church where she always enjoyed the fun, food and fellowship. She also was a former participant of the Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living, Inc. (CVACL) Group which met at New Vine Baptist Church. She enjoyed socializing with her peers.
Mary is survived by three sons, Roger Nowlin, Jr. of Monroe, VA, Mark Nowlin (Bertina) of Garland, TX and Maurice (Griselda) Nowlin Sr. of Fredericksburg, VA; daughter, Ophelia (Addison) Thomas, Jr of Forest, Va; ten grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, a devoted niece, Mrs. Rhodie Herndon and a host of other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 220 Breezewood Drive Lynchburg, VA 24502. Rev. Dr. Harland Brown will officiate; Rev. H. Lee West will deliver the eulogy.
