Maxine Routon Candler

Maxine Routon Candler passed away on January 19, 2013 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Born April 9, 1918, Maxine lived most of her 94 years in Lynchburg, Virginia, with the last 11 in Lake Charles. Clarence D. Candler, Jr., her husband for 40 years preceded her in death in 1983. Also preceding her in death were her parents Harry S. Routon and Marian Blackburne Routon, her siblings: Wyatt V. Routon (Carolyn), Harry S. Routon, Jr., and Grace (Bob) Altic; and her daughter Patricia C. Tuttle of Williamsburg, Va. in 1994.

She is survived by her daughter Marian Richardson and her husband Ken of Lake Charles, 7 grandchildren: Jenny T. Ellis (Gregg) Emily Tuttle (Chad Little), Abby T. DiSalvo (Marc), Zachary Tuttle, and Tyler Tuttle all of Va., Bill (Channing) Richardson of Texas and Beth R. (Don) Lordo of Tenn.; as well as 4 great grandchildren: Reese, Jack & Olivia Richardson of Texas and Sam DiSalvo of Virginia.   She is also survived by her son-in-law Jim Tuttle (Beverly) of Williamsburg, sister-in-law Selene Routon and niece Laurie Serra both of Clearwater, Florida and cousin Sandra Elder (Jim) of Lynchburg.

Maxine attended Phillips Business College in Lynchburg, and then worked at the Ideal Laundry in Lynchburg where she met and married her boss. Later she was the receptionist and bookkeeper for surgeons Drs. Pugh, Haynsworth, Owen, Hill and Smith for 24 years until she retired to spend time with her grandchildren. She liked to share her stories about living thru the great depression and World War II with her friends and grandchildren. Though her mind was alert and sharp until the end, she was ready to go to Heaven.

Maxine was a lifelong member of Heritage United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Heritage United Methodist Church, 582 Leesville Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502 or to a church or charity of your choice.

\"Mac\" appreciated being able to have the connection with friends from Virginia and hearing from them. Now she is coming back to her home state. To God be the glory for all He has done.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 28, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Dr. Edwin Clever officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery.
