Melba Mae Updike

Melba Mae Updike, 85, of Lynchburg, died Saturday May 1, 2010 in Lynchburg.

Born Feb 15, 1925 in Bedford County she was the youngest of Walker Garfield and Hester Lansdown Updike\"™s nine children. In addition to her parents, Melba was preceded in death by three brothers, Colon, Homer, and Herbert Updike; and five sisters, Ena Atkinson, Bernice Wood, Laura Updike, Eddie Goggin, and Jania Carwile.  Melba was Valedictorian of her Moneta High School graduating class and went on to Nursing School at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She advanced in her chosen vocation of service to others to become both a Head Nurse at Virginia Baptist Hospital and the School\"™s Director of Nursing. Following her retirement, she continued her role as \"comforter\" during the illnesses of her brothers and sisters in their own advancing years.

Melba devoted her life to her nursing career and to her family, whom she adored. Melba was a life long member of the Quaker Baptist Church in Bedford, a member of the Bedford Genealogical Society, and a member of both The Blue Ridge Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and The Krikwood-Otey Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Melba is survived by four nephews: Melvin Wood, of Elliston, VA, Les Updike and his wife Barbara, of Henrico, VA, Mike Carwile and his wife, Sandy, of Hillsborough ,NC and Wyatt Carwile and his wife Annie, of Eugene, OR; and one niece: Patricia Connor and  her husband, C.T. of Gretna, VA.  She is also survived by her friend and resident caregiver Annie Carrington and by a cherished family friend Tom Gerhardt.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, prior to the funeral service, which will be held at 11:00 AM with Pastor David Timma officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
