On October 12, 2018, Melvin Dillard Barbour Sr., 85, went to his heavenly home surrounded by his family, at Heartland Health Care Center, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Melvin was born November 1, 1932, in Campbell County, Virginia, to the late Theodore and Gertrude Barbour Sr.
Melvin was preceded in death by his loving wife Evelyn Thorpe Barbour, one son Melvin “Blukey” Barbour Jr.; two brothers Overton Barbour (Vivian), Theodore Barbour Jr. (Flossie); two sisters, Dorothy Stanley and Virginia Barbour; one great great granddaughter, Indie Pannell; two son-in-laws George Martin and Dwight Thomas; one sister-in-law Phyllis Morgan; in-laws Viola Jennings (Albert), and Walter Thorpe; and one devoted niece, Beatrice Barbour.
He survived by one son, Gregory Barbour (Denita); three daughters, Celeste Paige, Marva “Denise” Martin, and Viola “Weeda” Thomas; grandchildren, Shelby Jackson (Thomas), Yasmine Radcliff, Melva Barbour, Crystal Johnson (Javor), Adrian Thornhill (Murrell), Michelle Davis, Andre West, Kerry Paige (Tomeca), Derek Paige (Tina), Myshia Barbour, Arnika Barbour, Deshawn Hall, and Jennifer Cranford; twenty-three great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Aubrey Barbour (Helen), and Robert Barbour (Janice); two sisters, Hattie Hicks, Josephine Johnson; one brother-in-law, Albert Jennings (Deborah); one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Barbour; devoted niece, Virginia Williams (Bobby); devoted family friend Romania Carrington; and a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Melvin was happily married for 64 years to the love of his life. He was well known and loved by many that he met. He was known for his kind heart and gentle spirit. Melvin was an Army Veteran who joined in 1954, and served on the Military Police Force, as a MP, at Fort Bragg Army Base in North Carolina. After leaving the Army, he went on to work many jobs over the years. Melvin enjoyed working at the Piedmont Flour Mill, working his way up to a supervisor before he retired many years later.
We will receive family and friends from 6 until 7 p.m., Friday, October 19, 2018, at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia with burial following at Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will meet at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m., prior to the service.
