Melvin Earl Templeton, 88, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 23, 2021. He was the devoted husband of Barbara Moore Templeton for 63 years.
Born in Bedford County, Va. on January 18, 1933, Melvin was a son of the late Raleigh Edward Templeton and the late Dolly Jennings Templeton. He served our nation in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Melvin, a quiet and kind-hearted man, loved God, his family, and his Bedford County community where he was a life-long member and served in multiple capacities over the years. He was a Sunday School teacher at both Boonsboro United Methodist Church and North Bedford Baptist Church, as well as serving as Pack Leader for the Cub Scouts. He was a valued member of the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Department, the Boonsboro Ruritan Club, the Bedford County Public Service Authority, and the Bedford County School Board. His heart belonged to the mission field, serving throughout the world in different capacities. Particularly important to him was a health clinic in a remote region of Honduras that he, along with North Bedford Baptist Church and Boonsboro United Methodist Church, founded and supported.
Along with his wife, he is survived by three children, David Templeton and his wife, Jeanie, of Forest, Susan Tomlin and her husband, Joseph, of Coleman Falls, and Mary Caldwell and her husband, C.J., of Roanoke; six grandchildren: Jonathan (Courtney), Gregory (Emily), Caleb (Ashley), Libby (Brinson), Jennings (Justin), and Jordan; and six great-grandchildren: Aspen, Owen, Nora, Jack, Max, and Jolee. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Maynard, Lawrence, and Dan; and two sisters, Thelma and his twin Martha.
A celebration of Melvin’s life will be held on Friday, August 27, 2021 at North Bedford Baptist Church at 12 p.m. with Pastor Charles Brady officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
