Melvin Eugene Houston Sr.

Melvin Eugene Houston Sr., 90, of Coleman Falls, died Thursday, July 18, 2019 at his residence with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of the late Ruby Tinnell Houston.
Mr. Houston was born March 12, 1929, in Lynchburg, a son of the late Frank Lee Houston and Mazie Fitzgerald Houston. He served his country in the U.S. Army and then again in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Griffin Pipe.
He is survived by his children, Melvin E. Houston, Jr., Gary W. Houston and his wife Ella, Danny L. Houston, Jimmy D. Houston; a daughter, Wanda H. Hawkins and her husband Jerry; Roger “Sam” Houston and his wife Terri; nine grandchildren, and 23 great- grandchildren and his devoted pet, Heather.
Melvin was preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Lynn and Karen Houston; two brothers, Elwood L. Houston, and Frank W. Houston; and two sisters, Arlene H. Harman and Dora H. Wright.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the Houston family cemetery. Military honors provided by American Legion Post 16.
