Mike Edward Harmon

Mike, the Beginning
Mike Edward Harmon was born in Lynchburg’s Dearington community on July 14, 1966, to the late Deacon Sidney J. Harmon Sr. and Deaconess Jerean M. Harmon. There were twelve children in the family until God called brother James Harmon home; Mike was the last.
His education began at Dearington Elementary School, and he graduated from EC Glass High School in 1984.
Mike, a Family Man
Mike met and married the love of his life, Shelley Johnson. He adored Shelley. Anyone that knew Mike for a moment knew how much he loved “his Queen.” Mike and Shelley married on April 3, 1999. They enjoyed life together while they built a life together. He loved traveling and experiencing unfamiliar places, people, and things. Mike was cautiously adventurous.
As much as they enjoyed each other, they had time for their children-Takeisha Johnson; Christopher Johnson; Michale Harmon (Kea); Michelle Fox (Marquis); Jessica Johnson; Christopher Harmon (Carrie); Edward McIvor and grand-children- Kailany-(P-Nut), Jaiden, Makiah, Isaiah, Trejuan, Cameron, Maya, Mariah, Draxx, Marci and Maliah.
Mike loved his family, family gatherings, and the DALLAS COWBOYS. The summer cookouts – beginning in June and the end of summer bash; Thanksgiving; Christmas; and the Fourth of July; were all occasions for the family to get together. Of course, a Sunday evening Dallas game could quickly become an impromptu family gathering at Mike’s house.
Mike, a Godly Man
At an early age, Mike confessed Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He became a full-fledged member of the Fifth Street Baptist Church, where he was raised and nurtured in the ways of the Lord under the pastorate of the late Dr. Joseph D. Moore, Sr. Mike worked faithfully in the church as a member of the Diaconate and Men’s Chorus. He also served as President of the Christian Education Ministry and a Vacation Bible School teacher. He looked forward to his roles in the Black History reenactments.
Mike genuinely loved the Word of God. It was not unusual to see Mike sitting on his bus reading his Sunday School lesson. He was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He had praise and thanksgiving in his mouth for God’s goodness to him and his family.
Mike, a Community Man
Mike never met a stranger. He had a magnetic personality. He drew people to him. Once you met him, you enjoyed being in his company. You would often be the butt of his jokes, but the sound of laughter that came from him was so hysterical that you would forget you were laughing at yourself.
During the eighteen years he worked at Coca-Cola as a merchandiser “throwing” sodas, he met thousands of people in Lynchburg and adjacent counties. He touched many lives over a Coke product. He gave new meaning to a Coke and a smile.
He also worked for Lynchburg City Schools for 28 years as a transportation engineer (bus driver). Affectionately known as Mr. Mike by the students, he was a life coach, and influencer without realizing his impact on their lives. Mike performed various duties over the years such as lead training instructor; the head of the safety team; and a third-party tester for the DMV.
Mike had other side interests – he was a fitness guru, trainer, and entrepreneur. He ran a fitness camp-M & S Boot Camp, and his little t-shirt shop. Countless people will remember Mike for his poetry writing. His received request for poems at weddings, funerals, anniversaries, and black history programs. Some of the most beautiful works are those written commemorating extraordinary events with Shelley– Mike’s Sonnets and Ballads.
Mike, the Final Chapter
Many people look upon death as a sad occasion, but the death of a Christian is a glorious time, for the psalmist in Psalm 116: 15 says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” So, it was on Sunday morning, December 13, that the Lord took another one of his saints, Mike Edward Harmon. The memories we have of Mike will always be dear to our hearts. We should rejoice for we know he has gone to a home more beautiful than any we have known.
Mike leaves many family members who will cherish in their hearts memories and laughter shared. In addition to Shelley, his wife, and their children and grandchildren, Mike leaves his siblings: Elder Fletcher Hubbard (Savannah); Sidney Harmon, Jr.; Eleanor Williams; Margaret Saunders (Herman); Juanita Poindexter; Hester Bruce (John); Rev. Garrett Harmon (Eva); Julia Jones (Terry); Oscar Harmon; and Sharon “Kaye” Allen (Lawrence). Mike also leaves a mother-in-law, Mary Horsley, a sister-in-law, Kelly Helm, two brothers-in-law, Kazan and Sterling Johnson: two aunts, Ida Holland, Minister Lola Reynolds (Floyd}, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mike reached the closing chapter in the book “Life Down Here” but is just beginning the first chapter in the book “Life Everlasting.” His brothers and sisters in Christ have the blessed assurance that we will meet him again when God calls all His children home to the mansions prepared.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Fifth Street Baptist Church ***There will be NO Repast ****.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword. As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our LORD. (Romans 8:35-39 NIV).
