Mitsuko Miyazato “Mitzi” Burks

Mitsuko Miyazato “Mitzi” Burks, 85, of Amherst passed away suddenly and peacefully on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehab Center where she had happily resided for more than 20 years.

Born in Nagoya, Japan on February 13, 1938, Mitzi was the daughter of the late Antoku and Oto Miyazato. In addition to her parents, Mitzi was preceded in death by her loving son Samuel “Sammy” Burks. Mitzi is survived by her sister Fumiko Gushiken of Naha, Okinawa; her two sons, John Burks of Philadelphia, PA and Joseph Burks and his wife Marie of Converse, Texas along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mitzi loved playing bingo and attending activities with her many friends at Fairmont and was the first to lend a helping hand if someone was in need. Mitzi was also known to generously feed everyone and anyone and it gave her great pleasure to do so.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff, residents and volunteers at Fairmont as they truly made Mitzi’s life rewarding in a loving and caring environment.A celebration of Mitzi’s life will be held on May 20,2023  from 1-3p.m. at Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehab Center, 173 Brockman Park Dr, Amherst, VA 24521. Friends and family are invited to attend. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made to the Fairmont Crossing Activities Fund, sent to Fairmont in care of Amanda Kocher.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
