Colonel (Retired) USA M. Earl Eanes, 89, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, October 12, 2017. He was the husband of Barbara Lundy Eanes for 40 years.
Earl was born February 02, 1928 in Fieldale, Va. He was the son of the late Bob Lee Eanes and Lucy Haynes Eanes of Pleasant Grove, Va.. In addition to his wife, Earl is survived by son, Robert Scott Eanes and wife Barbara S. Eanes of Jamestown, NC, grandsons: Robert Earl Eanes of High Point, NC, and Matthew Houston Eanes of Jamestown, NC; granddaughter: Sydney Nicole Lundy of Tampa, Fl.; Stepson Joseph “Chip” Lundy of Rustburg, Va. and two stepdaughters; Dru Ann Lundy of Tampa, Fl. and Leigh Lundy Anderson of Alexandria, Va.
Earl proudly served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and U.S. Army in Korea where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in military operations against an armed enemy. He retired from the Army in 1985. Earl was a graduate of Virginia Tech where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was a member of the Corp of Cadets there achieving the rank of Captain.
Earl was an accomplished hunter, salt and fresh water fisherman. He designed and built custom fishing rods and knives. He enjoyed photography, developing much of his own film and professionally matting and framing work for himself and others. Earl was a talented macramé artist and woodworker. He was an avid stamp collector and shared his love for the hobby with his devoted friend Murrell Campbell.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 15 at 3:00 pm. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of Earl’s life will follow at 4:00 pm. Interment will be February 7, 2018 at 11:00 am in Arlington National Cemetery.
