Nancy Cleveland White

Nancy Cleveland White of Lynchburg died Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at her residence.

She was born in Lynchburg on March 14, 1927, a daughter of the late Lemuel Wills White, Sr. and Nannie Frazier White. Nancy was the youngest of their eight children and was the last one surviving.

Nancy studied at Ferrum College, Lynchburg College, and Duke University. She earned her divinity degree from Union theological Seminary in Richmond, where she was the first full-time female student. Nancy became a Methodist minister and served a number of churches, often as their first woman pastor.

Nancy later earned her master’s degree in social work from Richmond Professional Institute, now part of Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a local social worker for the City of Lynchburg and later for the Commonwealth of Virginia, from where she retired. Nancy also taught sociology at Lynchburg College and established the social work degree program at Longwood University. After her retirement from the state, Nancy returned to the ministry. She also conducted Bible study programs at numerous churches.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her siblings: Elsie Tinsley, Louise Beasley, Virginia Farmer, Gladys Milstead, Zephna Hodges, Lemuel White, Jr., and Edith Stone. She was also predeceased by two nieces and a nephew.

She is survived by Mary Ellen Hylton, her companion of 44 years. Also surviving are three nieces, three nephews, her church family, and many friends.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by hospice and Generation Solutions.

A funeral service will be conducted at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg on Monday, November 10, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Al Stewart officiating. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Presbyterian Cemetery.
