Nancy Patricia Griffin Hughes

Nancy Patricia Griffin Hughes, 86, died on Monday, June 10, 2019 at her home on Cranehill Drive in Lynchburg, Va. She was born to, now deceased, Posey and Gladys Griffin in Carrollton, Ga., on April 10, 1932. Her childhood was spent between Orlando and Carrollton. She graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1952 with a degree in Sociology. One of her life goals was to have 10 children which she accomplished with much aplomb and grand style.

Her youngest daughter, Sarah Ettie Thornhill Hughes, preceded her in death. For over sixty-four years, she was married to Holcombe A. J. Hughes, a Korean War Fighter pilot and auto dealer. She had much affection for Unity in The Seven Hills, the church she helped organize.

She loved her nine surviving children, twenty-one grandchildren and a multitude of great-grandchildren. She survived her older sibling, John Robert Griffin. Remaining are her husband, Holcombe and children: Halcyon Morrison Burkhardt and husband, Stephen, Kathryn Hughes Cone, widow of Steve, Patricia Hughes Haines and husband, Timothy, Sallie Hughes Tomlin, widow of Dale, Holcombe A. J. Hughes, Jr. and wife, Teresa, Gwendolyn Valentine Hughes, Joanna Holcombe Hughes-Crisler and Richard Crisler, Dorothy Sue Hughes and John Robert Griffin Hughes and grandchildren: Rowan Morrison Mayhew and Husband Josh, Griffin Iain Morrison, Aonghas Peter Morrison, Euan Robert Findley Morrison, Sarah Cone Beakes and husband Jeremy, Carly Cone Wickens and husband Brian, John Holcombe Haines, Anne Monroe Haines, Forest Dale Charles Tomlin, Jessica Leigh Hughes, Holcombe A. J. Hughes, III, Morgan Hannah Bass, Kathryn Elizabeth Bass, Eli Christina Crisler, Range Montgomery Crisler, Issabella Posie Crisler, Leopold Hickory Crisler, John Robert Griffin Hughes, Jr., Dabney Peter Hughes, Wednesday Thornhill Hughes-Hertzberg and Lovey Sarah Hughes-Hertzberg and great grandchildren: Belle Iona Mayhew, Eric Walt Mayhew, Sadie Spence Beakes, Ruby Kate Beakes, Joel Isaac Wickens, Gracen Shea Wickens, Reagan Brian Wickens, and Emmett Powell Wickens.

She had wonderful friends and particularly enjoyed the company of Donna McGill Christie and Susie Gardner. She had high ideals and enjoyed a lifetime study of metaphysics and parapsychology, associated with the A.R.E. Edgar Casey Foundation and helped organize private study groups.

A private memorial service for her will be held at a late date.
