Nancy Virginia Akers, 87, daughter of the late Gordon Hutton and Bernice Wooldridge Akers, born January 28, 1924, died December 6, 2011.
Nancy, a native of Lynchburg and a recent resident of The Oaks, was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, a past member of Iota Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, a graduate of Mary Washington (BA) and the University of Virginia (MA).
Nancy\"™s long distinguished career in education began at EC Glass, continued in Alleghany County, Clifton Forge, and at Altavista High School for 30 years. Her life centered around her teaching, her students, and her studies in Spain often accompanied by students. She had great interest in the arts, music, dance, and books. Nancy was also a gifted dancer and taught ballet at the Floyd Ward School of Dance.
Nancy\"™s generosity, happy disposition, and love of laughter were endearing qualities.
Nancy is survived by a special friend, Kathleen Burnette, her godson Douglas K. Harvey, the extended J.E. Burnette family of Rustburg, and several cousins.
A Graveside service will be conducted 11:00 am, Friday, December 9, 2011, at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. William B. Russell officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 8, 2011, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
