Nannie L. Smith

August 11, 1934 — February 1, 2021

Nannie Loretta Smith was peacefully called to her heavenly home on Monday, February 1, 2021 at Heartland Health Care Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Nannie was born on August 11, 1934, in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William N. Jackson and the late Nellie Harris Jackson.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, William “Bill”, Sylvester “Vest”, Thornhill “Coney”, and Thomas “Bump”; her sister, Ernestine “Teenie” and daughter Lisa.

Nannie (better known as Loretta or Lo) attended Lynchburg City Schools graduating from Dunbar High School.  Growing up in Chambersville, she was a faithful member of Wingfield Baptist Church. She worked many years in factories as a seamstress and later for Lynchburg City Schools in food service.

Those left to cherish her memories are her two sons Leroy Smith Jr. (Kaye) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lynn Smith (Cindy) of Madison Heights, Virginia; stepdaughter, Shirley Brown (Calvin) of Lynchburg, Virginia; a granddaughter, she raised like a daughter Tornia Myers (Titus) of Altavista, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Tanya (Eman), Calvin (Emily), Tiffany, Timothy, Joshua (Sandra), Tavarius, and Zachary; eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service for Nannie’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 12 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, Virginia.  The service will also be live streamed for those not able to attend physically.  

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
