Nathan Dixon McClure, III, 80, of Lynchburg passed away at his home Friday, December 20, 2024. He was the loving and devoted husband to Donna (Lievrouw) for over 57 Years.
Nate was born on December 20, 1944 in Cumberland, Maryland, the son of Nathan Dixon McClure Jr and Charloette Bender McClure. Nate was raised in Geneva, Illinois.
Nate was the proud father of Teal Iovinetti (Anthony) of Forest, Alicia Ann Schneider (Michael) of Bedford and Megan Cathleen Lam (Jason) of Forest. He was the loving and devoted Ampa to A.J. Iovinetti, Hannah McClure Schneider, Nicholas Michael Schneider, Gabriella Elise McClure Lam and Lillian Grace Lam.
Nate began his career in public service as a Deputy Sheriff with the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department in Rockford, Illinois. He transitioned from the Sheriff's Department to the Department of Emergency Services for Winnebago County where he became the director. In 1983 he moved to Muskegon, Michigan and became the Director of 911 Communications, a role he held for 17 years. In 2001, Nate joined the private sector and became a consultant for CTA Communications in Lynchburg, Virginia. After his retirement, Nate and Donna became snowbirds and enjoyed many warm winters together in Cape Coral, Florida. Nate and Donna also did extensive traveling together and he was very proud of the fact that he had visited all 50 states and 33 countries.
Nate was devoted to his family and to serving his community. He was a volunteer firefighter with Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department in Rockford and Norton Shores Fire Department in Muskegon. Nate also served on the board for the Campbell County Rescue Squad.
Nate served as president for his local Rotary clubs and was outspoken in their mission to eradicate polio. Nate’s father was a polio survivor, making Rotary’s mission to end polio worldwide a personal one. Nate, along with his father, his wife, and his three daughters, were all Paul Harris Fellows.
Nate was passionate about his role in public service, specifically with the Association of Public Communications Officers (APCO). His involvement with APCO spanned over 60 years where he served as State President (IL) and National President as well as held many committee positions. He attended over 50 national conferences.
Nate was an avid sailor and for most of his life could be found enjoying time on his sailboat or spending time with others who shared his passion for the water.
Nate was also very passionate about hockey, having played in his younger years, and rarely missed watching a Detroit Red Wings or Chicago Blackhawks game.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm Friday, January 10, 2025 at St Thomas More Catholic Church in Lynchburg. The Mass will be live streamed on the church Facebook page.
A mass of resurrection for Nate will be held at 12:00p.m Friday, January 10, 2025 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with Fr. John Christian as officiant. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. A reception will follow at the church.
