Nelson Edward Johnson

Nelson Edward Johnson, 88, of Bedford passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. He was born on September 14, 1934, in Bedford County. A son of the late Claude E. Johnson and Isabell Craig Johnson. In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patria Manley Johnson; sister, Brenda Manley; four brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.
Nelson was a gentle giant. He loved his family and spending time with them. His strong work ethic was so evident throughout his life. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp and also worked with the Bedford Police Department after his time in the military from 1957-1961. He was a retired truck driver who worked for many trucking companies during his work career such as Gulf and Mercer and also owned his own trucking company who shipped for various companies all over the United Sates. He loved hunting, fishing, and time in the outdoors. He was the past Scout Master of the Bedford Scout Troop #201, the CB Club, Big Island Hunt and Fish Club and later in life could be found working alongside his wife at the Shell Service station in Bedford.
Nelson is survived by his siblings, Evelyn Watson, Geraldine O’Connell, Dorothy Looney (Bob), Diane Lacy (Butch) and Phillip Johnson (Tammy). Brother and Sister-in Laws, Ida M Smith, Earl D. “Bo” Manley, John R. Manley (Judy) and Joan Manley. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many other family and friends.

A funeral service and celebration of Nelson’s life will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Pastor Sam Jones and Rev. Danny Newman officiating. Burial will follow the service at Virginia Memorial Park.
