Norman L. Snidow, a kind man with a strong intellect, a beautiful baritone voice, a remarkable memory and a humorous wit, died on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at his Westminster Canterbury home. “I’ve had a wonderful life; I am so lucky”, a phrase often repeated the last months of his life.
Born at Virginia Baptist Hospital on June 25, 1928, Norm attended the public schools of Lynchburg, VA graduating from E.C. Glass in 1945. He earned an undergraduate degree in physics and mathematics from Lynchburg College in 1949, and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Virginia in 1953. During his time at UVA, he received a Francis I. DuPont Fellowship and worked for DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware after graduating.
It was at DuPont where Norm first met Debbie Lobb. Married in 1955, Norm was the best friend and husband of Corinne L. “Debbie” Snidow for 63 years. Norm moved with his new bride back to Lynchburg to join Babcock and Wilcox and was one of the pioneering members of the Critical Experiment Laboratory. Notable assignments included work at the Institute for Atomic Energy in Lillestrom, Norway, an assignment to a fast reactor facility in Karlsruhe, Germany, and as an instructor in Power Plant Simulation at UCLA. Norm retired from Framatome and B&W in 1993 after 38 years.
A devoted family man who was proud of his extended family, Norm is survived by his wife, Debbie Snidow, a brother, Ray Snidow (Rose) of Lynchburg, a son and two daughters; Pam Bradford (Mike) of Lynchburg, Norman “Bam” Snidow Jr. of Richmond, and Sandi McLauchlin (Andrew) of Reston. His grandchildren include Sam Bradford, Lindsay Snidow, Kate Snidow, Will McLauchlin and Hannah McLauchlin. He was the step-grandfather of Rob Bradford and Kate Bradford and is also survived by nieces Janie (Mason) Alvis, Norma Adams, nephew David Snidow, and four great-nephews. His parents, John and Alma Snidow and a sister and brother-in-law Faye Adams (Lawrence) predeceased him.
Norm sang in the choir at Peakland Baptist Church for almost 40 years and delighted in the comradery and the fellowship of his choir mates and of his church family. Over the years, he served on numerous committees including the Diaconate, Stewardship, and Worship teams.
When contemplating his obituary, Norm remarked with some irony that Debbie was sure to include every detail, including the fact that he won the DuPont duplicate bridge competition in 1955. Among his many other accomplishments, he had a Fortran computer subroutine named after him; moved his family, including a toddler and a mother-in-law to Norway for a year, went on dozens of camping trips with three children in tow, and enjoyed contemplating solutions for two unsolvable math problems Fermat’s Last Theorem and Riemann’s Hypothesis in his idle time.
Friends are invited to a reception honoring the life of Norman L. Snidow at Westminster Canterbury in the Hume Room from 5-7 PM on Thursday, November 1, 2018. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM on Friday, November 2, 2018 at Peakland Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Martha Kearse and the Reverend Nathan Brooks officiating. The family will also receive friends at the church following the service.
