Oliver H. “Doc” Jones

Oliver Hillory \"Doc\" Jones, age 90, passed from this life to the next on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011. Helen S. Jones, wife of 49 years, predeceased Doc Jones on December 27, 1995. Robert \"Bob\" Popek and Diane Popek-Jones were family friends for more than 40 years. Bob, Diane\"™s husband of 49 years, predeceased Diane Popek-Jones on January 27, 1996. The Jones and Popek families were joined in June 23, 1996 by the marriage of Doc Jones and Diane Popek-Jones.

Doc Jones was a veteran submarine sailor and Corpsman of the United States Navy, Pacific theater, during WWII and is now on \"Final Patrol\". While in the military, Doc served on the USS Sea Dog SS401, as Pharmacist mate, First Class, and ended service as Chief. Doc retired from Babcock & Wilcox Naval Nuclear Fuel Division in Lynchburg, VA in 1980. He was a founding member of the Central Virginia Credit Union, a member of Hurt United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion Post #16, a 50+ year member of the Reedy Spring Masonic Lodge #203, AF&AN, Concord, VA, a resident of Hurt, VA, and a retired hobby beekeeper.

Doc is survived by Diane Popek-Jones and their children: Richard O. Jones and wife, Rose, of Mt Holly, NJ, Mark T. Jones and wife, Andrea, of Christiansburg, VA, Hilarie L. Jones of Fayetteville, WV,  Gregory S. Jones of Gloucester/Saluda, VA, M. Kathleen Fritz and husband, Bob, of Lumberton, NJ, R. Grady  Jones and wife, Beverly, of Bridgewater, VA, H. Kelly Fisk and husband, Rick, of Richmond, VA, Robert \"Bob\" Popek and wife, Ada, of Doylestown, PA, Phillip Popek and wife, Katie, of Hurt, VA, Ellen Ashley and husband, Jim Torrey, of Summerfield, NC, Tom Popek of Moneta, VA., and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family wants to express their appreciation to Autumn Care of Altavista for their wonderful, professional care during Doc\"™s last few years. The memorial service will be in Tharp Chapel at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory of Lynchburg, VA, Saturday May 14th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Altavista EMS at 1510 Main St, PO Box 1, Altavista, VA 24517.
